Human Legacy
Introduction: Human Legacy - More Than Just Material Inheritance
Human legacy is not merely a material inheritance that people pass down; it transcends that to include the ethical and moral influences we leave on others through our daily interactions. A person is considered responsible for their moral and ethical impact on those around them. This meaning is reflected in God's words: "Indeed, We bring the dead to life and We record what they have sent ahead and their traces" (Ya-Sin: 12), where the Quranic text indicates that the traces we leave behind are an integral part of our human legacy, whether those traces are positive or negative.
God Almighty calls us to good conduct and emphasizes that the good we offer does not go to waste: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it" (Al-Zalzalah: 7), and this small atom could be a kind word or a noble stance, transforming into a moral legacy that contributes to building society.
For every good you bring to the people,
Seeds of love are sown in jasmine,
Making hearts pulse with hopes anew,
And the sun shines bright in each new dawn.
Legacy in Every Encounter
In every encounter between people, individuals inherit others with thoughts and feelings that influence their perceptions and behaviors. God Almighty says in His Book: "And speak to people good" (Al-Baqarah: 83), which indicates the importance of positive and kind communication among people. A kind word may become a legacy left by a person unknowingly, turning into a source of joy or inspiration for others.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Righteousness is good character" (Reported by Muslim), emphasizing that good character is a type of legacy that people exchange among themselves. These kind dealings and positive encounters form part of the moral legacy we pass down daily.
If you honor people with a kind word,
You enrich hearts with light and glow,
For a pleasant voice echoes all around,
And the flowers hear it before they grow.
As Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari stated: "True words come from a sincere heart and reach the hearts of others," expressing the idea that the encounters and dialogues we experience are not merely passing events but a means to convey deep moral impacts.
Ethical Legacy and Daily Interactions
Daily interactions are among the most crucial tools through which we transmit our ethical legacy. God Almighty clarified this in His saying: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety" (Al-Ma'idah: 2). Helping and cooperating for good among people are not merely daily actions but a moral legacy that becomes entrenched in society and continues to have an impact.
A person's actions, whether good or bad, reflect back on them and those around them, as indicated in the prophetic hadith: "Whoever guides to a good deed will have a reward similar to that of its doer" (Reported by Muslim). Here, it is evident that every good act is considered a moral legacy that continues even after the moment has passed.
So be like the palm tree in giving,
For if you do not bear fruit, you will still shade others,
You serve with patience and live with a heart,
Lifted by hands, always without burden.
As Jalal al-Din al-Rumi expresses this matter in his poetry: "What you sow today in people's hearts will continue to grow in their souls forever," which confirms that the impacts of good conduct are not momentary but spread and expand in society like ripples in water.
Ethical Legacy in Society: The Spread of Positive and Negative Effects
God Almighty explains in the Quran that the negative impact of actions spreads as much as positive results do: "Whoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by its equivalent" (Ghafir: 40). Here, we see how negative circles directly affect the individual and society.
Ibn Arabi, one of the great Sufis, states: "The world is like a mirror, reflecting what we plant in it from intentions and actions," emphasizing that actions, whether positive or negative, return to the individual multiplied. In the same vein, Buddha, in his teachings, asserts that "karma is what a person creates for themselves." Therefore, a good deed leaves a lasting impact on its doer and their surroundings, while a negative action may lead to circles of evil and harm.
And every action you present in this world,
Has consequences in the soul that reveal,
So be cautious to steer your deeds,
So that you may become a seed of goodness in spirit.
Choosing the Positive Ethical Legacy
Every person daily chooses the legacy they will leave through their actions and dealings. In the Holy Quran, God says: "And whatever good you send before yourselves, you will find it with Allah" (Al-Baqarah: 110), which affirms that every good deed we perform is a moral legacy that precedes us into the afterlife.
Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari expresses this concept by saying: "The deeds planted with sincerity bear fruit in this world and the Hereafter," confirming that good actions do not merely have effects in this world but extend their influence to beyond life.
So choose the path of goodness for yourself,
For the degrees in paradise are a beacon,
For every good you do,
Your spirit rises, and you soar faster in the sky.
The Ethical Legacy in the Digital Age
With technological advancements and the emergence of the digital world, the impact of words and actions has become more potent and widespread. God says in the Quran: "No word is uttered except that there is a watcher by him, ready" (Qaf: 18), indicating that every word, whether in the real world or the digital one, is recorded and becomes part of our ethical legacy.
Jalal al-Din al-Rumi clarifies in his poetry that "a word is the arrow that cannot be returned," expressing the immense power of words and their lasting effects in the digital world. A kind word can build, and a bad word can destroy, which is why choosing what we say or do online is part of our ethical responsibility.
In the realm of the internet, words are sown,
Their impact transcends through time,
So let us adorn ourselves with kind words,
And plant love in every place we climb.
Conclusion: The Legacy We Leave Behind
So, Human legacy is not merely a material inheritance; it encompasses the values and morals we sow in the hearts of others. God says in the Quran: "So whoever volunteers for good, it is better for him" (Al-Baqarah: 184), emphasizing that choosing goodness is a conscious choice that can be a lasting legacy affecting future generations.
Ibn Arabi summarizes this concept by stating: "True knowledge lies in knowing oneself, and whoever knows themselves knows the world," indicating that our human impact begins from within, from our deep understanding of ourselves and how we interact with others. Every moment, every encounter, is an opportunity to plant seeds of good or evil, and we must wisely choose the legacy we leave behind.
